Meanwhile, the horse that had been powering the barge in day light, was finding its own way over the hill to rejoin the barge on the other side, there being no tow path within the tunnel system. Leaving the Medway Maritime Marina opposite Upnor Castle, she was under sail within five minutes, and for nine hours a lively party of guests got a taster of life afloat as we headed out for the concrete gun forts in the Thames estuary. During the voyage we saw the Admiralty tug, TID 164, under tow, Sir Winston Churchill's funeral barge - Havengore - head up river with a party of scouts, enjoyed a variety of craft at the two major Medway ports, Sheerness and Thames Port, and passed the wreck of the loaded ammunition carrier, the Liberty ship USS Robert Montgomery. But in the early part of this decade she was towed to Portsmouth to have a hullscrape, and a repaint. On her return, hundreds turned out at Gravesend to see her pass the town. None of them counted on the weather interfering with the final stages of her journey. As the ship was brought alongside Northfleet the high winds caught her. The skipper of the tug incharge - whose father had towed Belfast up-river when she first went into preservation - decided the best thing was to return to the Ocean terminal at Tilbury, and moor her for the night. They plan to build and restore ships, and to create up to 50 jobs in the towns where shipbuilding once was a way of life.
